A laptop that dies in an hour does not always need a new battery. Rapid drain comes just as often from a background process keeping the CPU awake, power settings that stop the machine sleeping, a dust-blocked cooling system, or a charging circuit that never quite fills the cell — and fitting a battery fixes none of those. So we start with the numbers: cycle count, measured capacity against the design capacity, how the machine behaves through a real charge and discharge, and whether the charger and charging circuit are delivering what they should. If the cell has genuinely worn out, we fit a quality replacement at our Putney workshop and verify it before it goes back. If the battery is fine, we tell you that instead.

Battery Health Diagnostics

Cycle count, maximum capacity against the original design capacity, wear level and behaviour through a real charge and discharge. You see the actual numbers, so the decision to replace is an informed one rather than a guess.

Swollen Battery Removal

A cell that has started to swell is a safety matter, not a cosmetic one. We remove it carefully, check the trackpad, keyboard deck and base panel for pressure damage, fit a replacement and dispose of the old cell responsibly.

Rapid Drain Fault-Finding

Where the cell tests healthy, the drain is coming from somewhere else. We look at background processes, sleep and power settings, thermal behaviour and a cooling system that may be choked with dust — and fix the cause instead.

MacBook Batteries

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro cells fitted at the workshop, including the adhesive-mounted batteries on newer models that need patient removal rather than force. Cycle count and health verified in System Information before return.

Charging Circuit Checks

Will not charge and will not hold charge are two different faults. We test the charger output, the DC jack or USB-C port and the board-side charging circuit before condemning the battery, because replacing the wrong part is an expensive way to learn.

Verified Before Return

Where the model needs it we run the BIOS or SMC battery calibration, then a full charge and discharge cycle, so we know the new cell holds its rated capacity before you collect the machine rather than finding out a week later.

Bring the machine into the Putney shop or book a collection. Before anything is quoted we run the battery health check and test the charger and charging circuit, so we know what is actually wrong.

Is a battery replacement worth it on your machine?

This is the question we are asked more than any other, and the honest answer turns on three things — the state of the machine, what the numbers say, and what you actually use it for:

The rest of the machine is healthy

If the screen, keyboard and storage are all fine and the machine is still fast enough for what you do, a battery is the cheapest way to get several more years out of something that cost far more than the repair.

The numbers say wear, not fault

A cell that has done 900 or more cycles and sits well below 80% of its design capacity has simply reached the end of its life. That is a straightforward replacement and a worthwhile one.

It has failed early

A low cycle count with poor capacity, or a Mac reporting Service Battery well ahead of schedule, points to a faulty cell or a heat problem rather than normal wear. Worth replacing, and worth finding out why.

When we would say no

On a machine that is also slow, short of storage and past software support, a new battery is money into a dead end. We would rather lose the sale than fit a cell to something you will replace in six months.

The health check settles most of this in minutes, which is why we run it before quoting rather than after.

When fast drain is not the battery at all

A fair number of machines that arrive here for a battery turn out to have a different fault entirely. These are the ones we see most:

  • A background process or runaway app holding the CPU awake, so the machine never really idles
  • Sleep and power settings that keep it half-awake in the bag, so it arrives flat despite being closed
  • A charging circuit, DC jack or USB-C port not delivering full current, so the cell never reaches a true 100%
  • A failing charger, which mimics a dying battery almost exactly
  • Heat — a dust-blocked cooling system works the fans and CPU harder, and heat also ages the cell faster than normal use

Each of these has a cheaper fix than a new battery, and none of them are solved by fitting one.

Swollen battery: what to do today

A lithium cell that has begun to swell is the one battery fault worth acting on now rather than next month:

  • Stop charging it, and stop using it altogether if the case is visibly bowed or the trackpad has lifted
  • Do not press on the swelling, and do not try to prise the cell out — a punctured lithium cell is a genuine fire risk
  • Move it powered off and on its own, not squeezed into a full rucksack
  • Bring it in or ask us to collect it; we remove, replace and dispose of swollen cells safely

Left alone, a swollen cell keeps expanding and pushes the trackpad, keyboard deck or screen out of true — which turns a battery job into a chassis job.

Is it worth replacing a MacBook battery?
Usually yes, if the rest of the machine is sound. Hold Option and click the Apple menu, open System Information, then Power, and look at Cycle Count and Maximum Capacity. A battery past roughly 1,000 cycles, or holding well under 80% of its design capacity, has worn out normally — and a replacement restores the runtime on a machine that cost several times the price of the repair. The answer changes if the Mac is also short of storage, slow and out of macOS support, in which case we will tell you the money is better spent elsewhere. How much does a laptop or MacBook battery replacement cost?
Battery replacement falls inside the £60 to £200 band we quote for hardware repairs, and where you land depends on the cell and the disassembly. Mainstream Windows laptops with an accessible battery sit at the lower end. MacBook Airs and older Intel MacBook Pros sit in the middle. My laptop battery drains really fast — does that mean it needs replacing?
Not necessarily, and it is worth checking before spending anything. Fast drain has several causes that have nothing to do with the cell: a background process holding the CPU awake, power settings that never let the machine sleep properly, a dust-blocked cooling system running the fans hard, or a charging circuit that never fills the battery to a true 100%. My laptop only works when it's plugged in — is that the battery or the charging port?
It can be either, and they need completely different repairs, which is why we test both. A worn cell that no longer holds charge behaves almost identically to a failed DC jack or a charging fault on the board. We check the charger output, the jack or USB-C port and the board-side charging circuit alongside the battery itself. In this Acer charging fault in Putney the charger LED was lit and a port repair looked like the obvious answer — but the jack and the charging controller both tested healthy and the battery cell had failed. Getting that the wrong way round means paying for a repair that changes nothing.
Is a swollen battery dangerous, and can you replace it?
Yes to both. A swollen lithium cell has failed chemically and will keep expanding — it can bow the base panel, lift the trackpad or keyboard, and in the worst case become a fire risk. Stop charging it, stop using it if the case is visibly distorted, do not press on the swelling and do not try to lever the cell out yourself. Bring it into the Putney workshop or ask us to collect it, and we will remove the cell safely, check the surrounding parts for pressure damage, fit a replacement and dispose of the old battery responsibly.
