Lenovo ThinkPad no-POST BIOS firmware recovery in Putney SW15
Lenovo ThinkPad wouldn't POST after a failed BIOS update. At our Putney SW15 workshop we reprogrammed the SPI flash chip with verified Lenovo firmware.
Cracked Lids, Seized Hinges and Mounts Torn Through the Plastic — Including Models Nobody Makes Parts For Any More
Last updated: August 2026
Most hinge quotes die at the same point. The manufacturer discontinued the hinge, the lid or the base years ago, nobody can order the part, and the machine gets written off as uneconomical. That is a supply problem rather than a repair problem, and the two are not the same thing. A hinge that has seized and started tearing out of its mounting points can usually be freed off, re-tensioned and the mounting area rebuilt, so the lid holds position again without prising the chassis apart every time it opens. Where parts still exist we fit them. Where they do not, we repair and reinforce what is already there. Either way you get a straight answer on how long the fix will hold before any work starts, because a hinge repair that fails again by Christmas is not worth your money or our bench time.
The work we carry out is covered by a 90-day warranty. If the same fault comes back inside that window, we put it right.
We collect and return across South West London at no charge, so you do not have to make the trip to get your machine looked at.
Same-day turnaround is available on many jobs — ask when you book and we will confirm availability and any additional cost before we start.
Where the part is still available, hinges are replaced in pairs so the lid loads evenly rather than pulling to one side. Bezel and display assembly come off, both hinges are swapped, and the lid is re-tensioned through its full range.
Once a hinge has torn out of the plastic, a new hinge on its own will tear out again. We rebuild the mounting area — reinforcement behind the mount, repositioned fixings, cracked plastic bonded and strengthened — so the load is carried properly.
On older and less common models the lid, base and hinge are simply not manufactured any more. Rather than write the machine off, we repair and reinforce the original parts and ease off over-tight hinges so they stop stressing the shell.
Split bezels, separated lid corners and cracked palmrests are put right alongside the hinge itself, because on most machines they are the symptom of the hinge rather than a separate accident.
The display cable runs through the hinge barrel, so a seized or misaligned hinge has been bending and chafing it for months. We inspect and test the cable and connector while the lid is apart, before flicker or image loss becomes the next repair.
A hinge pulling unevenly loads one corner of the panel and can crack it with nothing ever having struck the screen. We check the panel before and after the repair and quote any screen work separately and clearly.
Simple steps to get your problem solved quickly and professionally.
Bring it into the Putney shop or book a collection. We open the lid up, look at what the hinge has done to the mounts, the cable and the panel, and check whether parts are still made for your exact model.
You get the realistic options — replace the hinge, rebuild the mounting area, replace the lid assembly, or repair the original parts because nothing is available — each with a price and an honest view of how long it will hold.
Approved work goes ahead at the workshop. Where we are reinforcing rather than replacing, we tell you exactly what has been done, so you know what the machine will and will not take afterwards.
The lid is cycled through its full range, the display cable and panel are re-tested, and we check the hinge holds the screen at any angle without straining the chassis before it goes back to you.

This is the single most common reason a hinge repair gets refused elsewhere. Here is what can still be done when the part list has run dry:
A Dell that came into the Putney workshop with a cracked palmrest, a damaged base and seized hinges was exactly this case — no base or hinge parts made for the model at all, so we reinforced the chassis and eased the hinges instead of writing it off. The FAQs below link to the full write-up.
Hinge damage is progressive, and the secondary damage almost always costs more than the hinge did:
The crack spreads
What starts as a split around one mounting point works its way along the lid corner with every open and close. Caught early it is a hinge job; left alone it becomes a lid job.
The display cable suffers
The cable to the screen runs through the hinge barrel. A seized or misaligned hinge bends it in ways it was never designed for, and flickering or a dead display follows sooner or later.
The panel cracks without impact
A hinge pulling unevenly loads one corner of the screen. Hairline cracks appear with nothing having hit it, which is why so many hinge jobs turn into hinge-and-screen jobs when they are left.
The repair gets bigger
A hinge and mount repair done early is a fraction of a hinge plus bezel plus panel plus chassis repair done late. The economics of the job change quickly.
If the lid is still opening at all, it is worth having looked at now rather than after the screen goes.
If you need the laptop working while you arrange the repair, these four things stop the damage accelerating:
When you book it in, have the exact make, model name and screen size ready. That is what decides whether parts still exist and which of the repair routes is open to you.
