Hardware & Software Inventory

A list of what you actually own: every computer, server, NAS, router and printer, with its age, specification and whether the operating system on it is still receiving security updates. Most businesses have never had this written down, and it is the foundation for every other decision.

Backup & Recovery Reality Check

The question is not whether a backup runs — it is whether it would restore. We check what is actually covered, where the copies live, how far back they go, and whether anyone has ever tested a restore. A backup nobody has tested is a hope, not a plan.

Security & Patching State

Where sign-ins stand, whether multi-factor authentication is on, who holds administrator rights, what protection is installed and reporting, and how far behind the updates have drifted. We look at this across every machine, because attackers only need the one that got missed.

Licence & Subscription Waste

We total up what leaves your account every month and match it against who is still using it. Licences for people who left, duplicate tools doing the same job, and plans a tier higher than you need are all common — and it is often the part of the audit that pays for itself immediately.

Who can get into what, and whether that still reflects who works for you. Old accounts left active, shared logins nobody can trace, and files open to everyone in the business are the three we find most often, and all three are quick to put right once you can see them.

Scope

A short call to establish how many people you have, roughly how many machines, whether there is a server or NAS, and how your team works. That tells us whether the audit can be done remotely, onsite, or a bit of both.

Review

We work through the devices, the backup, the security and sign-in setup, and your licensing. Most of it happens quietly in the background — your team keeps working while we look.

Report

You get a written summary: what we found, what it means in practice, and a prioritised list of what we would deal with first, second and eventually. Costs are indicated separately so nothing is bundled.

Decide

You decide what, if anything, to act on — with us, with your existing IT person, or not at all. The findings are yours to keep regardless, and we quote any work separately before it starts.

Who this audit is for — and who it isn't

This is a business audit. It is designed for organisations with more than one computer and something to lose if they stop working:

If you have a single home or personal computer you want checked over, this is the wrong service — a single-machine health check is what you need, and it costs a fraction of what a business audit would if we charged for one.

What we look at, in order of what usually matters

The audit follows the same structure every time, because the same five things determine whether a small business survives a bad week:

1. Could you recover?

If the office flooded tonight, or ransomware encrypted everything on Monday, what would you get back and how long would it take? We trace where each type of business data lives, what is backed up, and whether anyone has proved a restore works.

2. Could someone get in?

Email accounts without multi-factor sign-in, administrator rights spread too widely, and leavers still holding access are the three routes we see used. We map who can reach what and where the obvious openings are.

3. Is anything about to break?

Age, storage health, memory, and operating systems past their support date. A five-year-old machine is not automatically a problem, but a five-year-old machine holding the only copy of your accounts certainly is.

4. What are you paying for?

Subscriptions, licences and support contracts, totalled up and matched against actual use. Businesses are frequently surprised by what they are still funding and by how much of it duplicates something else.

5. What happens when it goes wrong?

Who gets called, what they can actually do, and how long you would be down. Sometimes the finding is simply that everything rests on one person's goodwill and mobile number.

Everything we find goes into the written summary, ranked by what would hurt most if it were left alone.

What the Audit Costs

The audit itself is free and carries no obligation. You receive the written findings whether or not you ask us to do anything about them, and you are welcome to hand them to whoever already looks after your IT. Any work you decide to go ahead with is quoted separately and agreed before it starts. Larger or multi-site businesses may need more than one session, and we will say so up front rather than after the fact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IT audit genuinely free, or is there a catch?

It is genuinely free, and the written findings are yours to keep even if you never spend a penny with us. We are open about why we offer it: a business that can finally see the state of its own IT usually wants the important gaps closed, and often asks us to do it — a fair number end up on managed IT support afterwards. But that is your decision to make after the report, not a condition of getting one. If you would rather take our findings to whoever already looks after your systems, that is completely fine.

I only want one computer checked — is this the right service?

Probably not. This audit looks at a business as a whole — multiple machines, the backup, the network, accounts and licensing — and it is aimed at organisations rather than individuals. If what you actually want is one laptop or desktop examined properly, our PC and Mac health check is the right thing: a full diagnostic on a single machine with a written report on its hardware, storage health, performance and security. Same honesty, different scope.

How long does it take, and will it disrupt our work?

For a typical small office of five to fifteen people, expect a half-day of our time, most of it running quietly alongside your team rather than interrupting it. We do need brief access to an administrator account and a few minutes with whoever knows how things were set up. Larger setups, multiple sites or an on-premises server take longer, and we will tell you that at the scoping call rather than discovering it halfway through.

What do you actually check about our backups?

More than whether the software says ‘successful’. We look at what is genuinely included and what has quietly been left out, where the copies are held, how far back you could go, whether anything is stored off-site or offline, and — the one that catches most people — whether a restore has ever been tested. Plenty of backups look healthy right up until the day you need one. If yours has gaps, backup solutions covers putting a properly tested arrangement in place.

Will the audit tell us whether we are ready for Cyber Essentials?

It gives you a very good indication. The audit covers much of the same ground — device support status, patching, sign-in security, administrator rights and firewalls — so you will finish it knowing roughly how far off you are. It is not the same thing as a formal readiness assessment, though: if certification is the actual goal, our Cyber Essentials readiness work assesses you specifically against the five controls and prepares the evidence. Broader protection work sits under cybersecurity.

Do we have to buy anything afterwards?

No. There is no obligation of any kind, and we would rather give you an honest report you act on in your own time than a sales document. If the audit finds nothing much wrong, we will say so — that happens, and it is a perfectly good outcome. Can the audit be done remotely, or do you need to visit?

Both are possible and it depends on your setup. If your team works largely in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace on laptops, a great deal can be reviewed over a secure remote session. If there is a server, a NAS, cabling, or kit tucked away in a cupboard nobody has opened in years, a visit is worth it — physical condition, ventilation and what is actually plugged in are things you cannot assess down a wire.
