A Mac Mini has no screen, no keyboard and no battery, which rules out most of what goes wrong with a MacBook and concentrates everything else. What we see instead is machines that will not power on, storage that has worn out, a single blower fan working against years of dust because the Mini lives behind a television, and ports that have quietly stopped responding. There is also a category of its own: because a Mini has no display of its own, one that looks dead is often only failing to hand over a picture, which is worth establishing before anybody writes it off. The upside is logistics — a Mini is the easiest Mac to get to us, so it is a straightforward walk-in to Putney or a free collection across South West London.

What We Fix on a Mac Mini

No-Power Diagnosis

A Mini showing no light and making no sound is usually the internal power supply, the power button board or the logic board. On Intel Minis the supply is a separate internal module, which means a dead Mini is frequently a repair rather than a write-off.

Storage Upgrades and Replacement

Minis up to 2012 take a standard 2.5-inch SSD, and several were built with two drive bays. The 2014 model uses either a blade SSD or a 2.5-inch drive depending on how it was specified. We confirm which yours is before quoting anything.

Memory Upgrades

The 2010 to 2012 Minis have two accessible memory slots behind a twist-off base and take minutes. The 2018 Intel Mini has sockets too, though reaching them means a full strip-down. The 2014 model is soldered, and on Apple silicon the memory is part of the chip.

Fan Noise and Overheating

Minis get tucked behind televisions, shut inside cabinets and stacked on top of routers, and they breathe through one blower fan. Years of dust plus a warm enclosed space is the commonest reason a Mini roars, throttles or shuts itself down.

Port and Connection Faults

HDMI outputs handing over no picture, USB ports that no longer recognise anything, Thunderbolt, Ethernet and audio faults. Some are board-level repairs and some are a failed cable or a macOS problem — the job is finding out which before replacing anything.

Minis running as media servers, backup targets or small office servers rarely have a screen attached, so faults arrive as it has stopped responding rather than as an error message. We test them the way they are actually used, not just on a bench monitor.

What can and cannot be upgraded, model by model

This is the question we are asked most about Minis, and the honest answer varies enormously by model year. In plain terms:

  • 2010 to 2012 — memory and drive both accessible behind a twist-off base; the best upgrade candidates by a distance, and some shipped with two drive bays
  • 2014 — memory soldered to the board and not changeable; storage is a blade SSD or a 2.5-inch drive depending on specification, and can be replaced
  • 2018 Intel — memory is socketed and upgradeable, but only through a full disassembly; storage is soldered and encrypted by the T2 chip, so it cannot be swapped
  • M1 and M2 — memory is part of the chip and storage is soldered to the logic board; neither can be upgraded after purchase, at any price
  • 2024 M4 — storage is a removable module again, but it is a proprietary Apple part rather than a standard SSD and needs re-initialising with Apple's tools, so it is not a routine upgrade
  • Any model — external Thunderbolt or USB-C storage is the sensible answer where the internal drive is fixed

We would rather turn away an upgrade that cannot be done than take the booking and explain afterwards. If the model you own is one of the fixed ones, you will hear that on the phone before you set off.

Working through a Mini that will not start

Because there is no screen, no battery and no keyboard involved, a dead Mini is one of the more logical faults to diagnose. The sequence we work through:

  • Confirm the mains lead and the socket, then check whether the status light comes on at all
  • No light, no fan, no sound — test the internal power supply, which on Intel Minis is a discrete module that can be replaced
  • Light but nothing else — the power button board and its cable come next, a surprisingly common failure on older units
  • Fan spins but nothing appears — the board is powered but not completing start-up, which moves it to board-level diagnosis
  • Chime or start-up sound but no picture — treat it as a video output or display problem, not a dead machine
  • Starts, then shuts down after a minute or two — usually thermal, occasionally a failing supply under load

Where the trail ends at the logic board, component-level repair usually costs a fraction of a board replacement, and it keeps whatever is on the internal storage — which on a T2 or Apple silicon Mini is the only route to that data.

Where you put a Mini decides how long it lasts

Almost every overheating Mini we open has the same story behind it. The machine is fine; its surroundings are not.

It breathes underneath and exhausts at the back

Air is drawn in through the vent ring around the base and pushed out of the rear. Standing one on carpet, a cloth or a stack of paperwork closes the intake, and nothing about the machine will tell you that is happening until it starts throttling.

Cabinets and media units are the worst offenders

A closed AV cabinet recirculates the Mini's own exhaust back into its intake. Left like that for years, the fan runs hard permanently and the dust load builds far faster than it would in open air.

Dust does not distribute evenly

It packs into the fan blades and the heatsink fins as a mat rather than a film. A can of compressed air aimed at the outside achieves very little; the fix is a strip-down, a proper clean and fresh thermal compound.

Always-on Minis age faster

A Mini serving media or backups around the clock runs its fan for years without a break. That is exactly the machine worth servicing preventatively, because the failure usually arrives as a shutdown rather than a warning.

Once it is cleaned and re-pasted, give it clear air on at least three sides and a hard flat surface underneath. That alone is worth more than any software tweak.

A strip-down clean and thermal service on a 2014 Mini and a power supply failure on a 2018 are different jobs using different parts, so we quote after diagnosis rather than advertising a number that would be wrong for half the machines that arrive. Can the storage be upgraded on an Apple silicon Mac Mini?
Not in the way most people mean, and this is worth saying plainly. On the M1 and M2 Mac Mini the storage is soldered to the logic board — there is nothing to unplug, and no upgrade path at all after purchase. The memory on those machines is part of the chip, so that is fixed as well. On the 2024 M4 Mini, Apple returned to a removable storage module, but it is a proprietary Apple part rather than a standard M.2 SSD and it has to be re-initialised with Apple’s own tools afterwards, so it is not a drop-in upgrade either. The practical advice on any Apple silicon Mini is to buy the storage you need at the point of purchase and add an external Thunderbolt or USB-C SSD later. We would rather tell you that than take a booking for something that cannot be done. Older Intel Minis are a different story — see SSD upgrades.
My Mac Mini will not turn on. Is it worth repairing?
Usually worth looking at. Unlike a laptop there is no battery or charging circuit in the way, so a dead Mini narrows down quickly to three things: the internal power supply, the power button board, or the logic board itself. The first two are parts. The third is component-level board repair, which is regularly a fraction of what a replacement board costs and keeps the machine’s storage — and therefore its data — intact. What we will not do is quote before we know which of the three it is.
The Mini powers on but there is no picture on the screen.
Common, and not always the Mini’s fault. A Mini ships without a display, so the HDMI or Thunderbolt handshake is doing a lot of work: a failing cable, a cheap adaptor, a television input that will not negotiate, or a monitor that has gone to sleep will all look identical to a dead computer from the outside. We test with known-good cables and screens before anything else. Where the video output genuinely has failed, it is a board-level fault rather than a graphics card swap — a Mini does not have one to replace.
Why is my Mac Mini so loud?
Nearly always heat, and nearly always down to where it lives. A Mini draws air in around its base and pushes it out of the back through a single blower fan, so a closed cabinet, a shelf directly above a router or a soft surface underneath will cook it. Add several years of dust packed into the fan and heatsink and the fan has no choice but to run hard. A full strip-down clean with fresh thermal compound resolves most of them. If it is still loud afterwards, the next suspects are a failing drive or a temperature sensor reporting incorrectly.
Can you recover data from a Mac Mini that will not boot?
Often, though the model decides how. On a 2012 or 2014 Mini the drive comes out and can be read on the bench like any other. On the 2018 Intel Mini the storage is soldered to the board and encrypted by the T2 chip, and on Apple silicon Minis it is tied to that specific machine — in both cases the computer itself has to be brought back to life before anything can be read off it, which is where board repair and recovery overlap. Do you upgrade the memory in a Mac Mini?
On the models that allow it. The 2010, 2011 and 2012 Minis have two accessible slots behind a twist-off base — a genuinely quick job that makes an old Mini far more usable, especially alongside an SSD. The 2018 Intel Mini has sockets as well, but they sit behind a complete disassembly, so it is a workshop job rather than something done at the counter. The 2014 Mini’s memory is soldered to the board and cannot be changed, and on every Apple silicon Mini the memory is part of the chip. Give us the model year and you will get a yes or a no rather than a maybe.
Is an old Mac Mini worth repairing, or should I replace it?
It comes down to the job it does. A 2012 or 2014 Mini running as a media server, a print server, a backup box or a second machine is usually well worth a clean, an SSD and some memory — it will keep doing that for years. A Mini being used as a main computer that can no longer run a supported version of macOS is a harder case, and we will say so rather than sell you a repair. The rule we apply is the same one we use on iMacs: if the repair costs well under half the price of replacing it and the machine still does what you need, repairing wins.
