FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a RAM upgrade cost?
A RAM upgrade starts from £55, including an 8GB DDR4 module and fitting. Larger or faster memory — 16GB to 32GB, or DDR5 — typically costs £120–£290 depending on the type your machine takes. We check exactly what your computer supports and confirm a fixed price before fitting.
How much RAM do I need?
8GB is minimum for basic use. 16GB is ideal for most users and future-proofs your system. 32GB+ is for power users doing video editing, 3D rendering, or running virtual machines.
Can all computers be upgraded?
Most can, but some laptops have soldered RAM that can’t be changed. All MacBooks from 2012 onwards have non-upgradeable RAM. We’ll check your specific model before proceeding.
Will more RAM make my computer faster?
If you’re running out of memory (check Task Manager), yes - significantly. If you have plenty of free RAM already, an SSD upgrade would make more difference. We’ll advise what’s best for your situation.
What's the difference between DDR3, DDR4, and DDR5?
These are different generations of RAM - they’re not interchangeable. Your computer only accepts one type. DDR5 is newest and fastest, DDR4 is most common currently, DDR3 is found in older systems.
Can faulty RAM stop my computer turning on?
Yes. RAM isn’t only about speed — a failed memory module can stop a machine booting at all, because a computer can’t start without working memory. Symptoms range from random blue screens and crashes on a machine that still boots, to a laptop that powers up but never reaches the desktop, sometimes with beeps or a flashing power light. We diagnose faulty memory by testing and swapping, then replace the bad module — as we did on an HP laptop that wouldn’t turn on in Putney.
How do I know if it's my RAM or my hard drive slowing things down?
They cause different kinds of slow. If your machine bogs down only when you have lots of programs or browser tabs open — and Task Manager shows memory near 100% — that points to a RAM shortage. If everything is slow all the time, including booting, that’s usually an ageing hard drive, and an SSD upgrade will help far more. We check which is the real bottleneck before recommending anything, so you spend on the upgrade that actually makes the difference.
Can you add RAM while I wait?
Often, yes — a straightforward memory upgrade on a laptop or desktop with accessible slots can frequently be done same-day once we have the correct module in. Bring it into our Putney workshop and we’ll check your model, confirm the right type, and fit it. Machines with soldered memory can’t be upgraded, so we always check yours first.
Will upgrading RAM lose my data or affect my warranty?
Upgrading memory doesn’t touch your files — your data lives on the storage drive, not the RAM, so it’s untouched by a memory change. On warranty: many laptops allow user-accessible memory upgrades without affecting cover, but some, and all Macs from 2012 onwards, have soldered RAM that can’t be changed. We’ll tell you exactly where your specific machine stands before doing anything.
