Do you offer remote virus removal across the UK?
Yes. Collection and workshop repairs are a South West London service, but a remote session is not tied to geography — if you are in Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh or anywhere else in the UK and your computer still starts up and connects, we can clean it from our Putney workshop just as effectively as if you lived round the corner. When can a virus not be removed remotely?
There are three honest exceptions. First, physical faults — if the machine will not power on, the screen is broken or the drive is failing, no remote session can help and it needs hands on it. Second, a computer that will not boot into Windows or macOS, or that cannot get online, because a remote session needs a working system to connect to. Third, ransomware that has already encrypted your files: we can remove the infection remotely, but decrypting or recovering the files themselves is a separate job that usually needs data recovery and depends entirely on the variant and your backups. We tell you which situation you are in at the start rather than charging for a session that was never going to work.
I think I have been scammed or hacked rather than infected — is that the same thing?
Related, but not the same, and the right response is different. A virus is software on your machine. Being scammed by a fake support call, or having an email or bank account taken over, is about access and credentials — and the malware, if there was ever any, may be the least of it. If someone talked you into letting them connect to your computer, or you have spotted logins you do not recognise, our scam and hacked device check is the right starting point: it looks at what was installed, what accounts may have been reached, and what needs changing first. If it turns out there is malware as well, we clean that too.
I keep getting pop-ups saying my computer is infected — is that real?
Usually those pop-ups are the scam itself, not a genuine warning. Fake ‘your computer is infected, call this number’ messages are a common tactic to frighten you into ringing a bogus support line or installing something harmful — never call the number and never let anyone remote in. Bring the machine to us and we’ll check whether there’s a real infection or just scareware, and clean it either way.
If I've been hit by ransomware, should I pay?
Our strong advice is not to pay if it can be avoided — paying funds the criminals and offers no guarantee of getting your files back. Bring the machine in and we’ll assess it: depending on the ransomware and whether you have a backup, recovery may be possible without paying. This is the clearest reason of all to keep good backups — they turn a ransomware attack from a disaster into an inconvenience.
Is it safe to keep using my computer if I think it's infected?
Better not to, especially for anything sensitive like online banking or entering passwords — an active infection may be logging what you type or capturing your accounts. Disconnect it from the internet if you can, stop using it for anything important, and get it checked. The sooner it’s cleaned, the less chance of accounts being compromised or the infection spreading further.
Will you need to wipe my computer to remove a virus?
Not usually. Most infections can be removed with your data intact — a full wipe is a last resort, not a first step. Occasionally a deeply embedded infection makes a clean reinstall the safest option, and if so we back up your data first and explain exactly why. Our default is always to clean and save, not to wipe.
