Lenovo ThinkPad no-POST BIOS firmware recovery in Putney SW15
Lenovo ThinkPad wouldn't POST after a failed BIOS update. At our Putney SW15 workshop we reprogrammed the SPI flash chip with verified Lenovo firmware.
Windows 10 security updates stop on 12 October 2027 — here's what that means for your PC, and for your office
Last updated: August 2026
On 12 October 2027, the Extended Security Updates programme that has kept consumer Windows 10 machines patched since free support ended comes to a stop. Microsoft extended that deadline by a year in mid-2026, and enrolment is now free with a Microsoft account — a genuine reprieve, but a reprieve rather than a fix. Around 21 million people in the UK are still running Windows 10. The honest position is that many of those machines can move to Windows 11 in an afternoon with everything intact — and a large number genuinely cannot, because they fall short of Microsoft's hardware requirements and no amount of work will change that. We check which one you are, tell you straight, and handle whatever follows: the upgrade, free ESU enrolment to use the extra time well, the move onto a different machine, or a staged plan across an office full of PCs. We've done this from our Putney workshop for over 25 years, for homes and small businesses across South West London.
The work we carry out is covered by a 90-day warranty. If the same fault comes back inside that window, we put it right.
We collect and return across South West London at no charge, so you do not have to make the trip to get your machine looked at.
Same-day turnaround is available on many jobs — ask when you book and we will confirm availability and any additional cost before we start.
We check the things that actually decide it — TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, processor generation, storage and RAM — and tell you plainly whether the machine qualifies. Often a blocker is just a BIOS setting we can switch on.
Where a machine qualifies, we run the upgrade properly: backup taken first, drivers and firmware brought up to date, then Windows 11 installed with your documents, programs and settings carried over.
Moving to a different machine? We transfer documents, photos, email accounts, browser bookmarks and saved passwords across, so the new PC feels like yours rather than a blank slate you have to rebuild.
For offices we inventory every machine, sort them into upgrade now, upgrade later and replace, then stage the rollout around your working pattern so nobody loses a day's work to it.
Some machines simply won't take Windows 11, and we'd rather say so than sell you work that doesn't help. We'll set out the realistic options and what each one costs, including refurbished replacements.
Every upgrade starts with a backup. Upgrades occasionally expose a hard drive that was already failing, and the difference between an inconvenience and a disaster is whether a copy of your data existed first.
Simple steps to get your problem solved quickly and professionally.
Tell us the make and model, or bring the machine in. We check the real blockers — TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, processor generation, storage — and whether your software will follow you across.
You get a straight answer and a price before anything happens: upgrade this one, replace that one, leave the third until the new financial year. If upgrading isn't sensible, we'll say so.
We take a backup first, then run the upgrade with your files, applications and settings carried over. For replacements, we migrate your data, email and settings onto the new machine.
We test the things that actually break — printers, scanners, Wi-Fi, VPNs, line-of-business software and drivers — so you get back a machine that works, not just one that boots.

Free Windows 10 support ended in October 2025. Since then, consumer machines have been kept patched through the Extended Security Updates programme — and after Microsoft extended it by a year, that now stops on 12 October 2027. Here's what changes, in plain terms:
Your PC keeps working
Nothing switches off. Windows 10 will still start, still run your programs and still connect to the internet the morning after the deadline. The change is completely invisible, which is exactly what makes it so easy to ignore.
But it stops being patched
No security updates means every flaw discovered after that date stays open on your machine permanently. The gap widens month by month, and unpatched systems are precisely what attackers go looking for.
ESU is a bridge, not a fix
The Extended Security Updates programme was designed to buy time for people who couldn't move straight away. Microsoft has already extended it once — from October 2026 to 12 October 2027 — and nothing further has been announced, so treat the new date as the real one.
Enrolment is free — and worth doing now
Consumer ESU enrolment is free with a Microsoft account sign-in, and the machine needs to be on Windows 10 22H2 for the option to appear. If a PC is staying on Windows 10 for now, being enrolled is the difference between patched and exposed — we can set it up or check it during any visit or health check.
Other software follows
Over the following year, browsers, security tools and business applications gradually drop support for an unsupported operating system. The practical squeeze usually arrives well before anything dramatic does.
None of this calls for panic — you now have until October 2027. It calls for using that time deliberately: enrol in ESU now, then upgrade or replace on your own schedule rather than Microsoft's.
Windows 11 has a hardware bar that Windows 10 never had, so a perfectly healthy, fast machine can still be refused. The usual blockers are:
There are ways to force Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware. We'll explain them honestly if you ask, but we don't recommend them: Microsoft doesn't guarantee updates for machines installed that way, which quietly reintroduces the exact problem you were trying to solve. Where a machine genuinely can't be upgraded, replacing it is the honest answer — and often a cheaper one than it first sounds.
An office with ten or thirty machines has a different problem to a household with one laptop. The kit was bought at different times, runs different software, and can't all be down at once. This is how we work through it:
Fleet audits and staged rollouts are quoted per site after we've seen what you have. Most offices find the audit alone is worth doing early, because it converts the October 2027 deadline into a dated, costed plan you can actually work to.
Not sure what you need? We're happy to help.
There's no charge for asking whether your machine qualifies — ring us with the make and model and we can usually answer on the phone. Where work is needed, you get a price per machine before anything starts. For context, our published bands are in-store diagnostics £40–80, remote support £40–90, and onsite visits £80–150. Business fleet audits and staged rollouts are quoted per site once we've seen what you're working with.
Quoted before any work · 90-day warranty on repairs · Free collection and return across South West London
