What Was Happening
A Putney customer brought in an Asus X501U with a display that had become unusable. The screen was showing distorted output — sections of the image were wrong, other areas were blank — and at times the display produced no image at all. The laptop itself appeared to be running normally: it started up, the keyboard and trackpad responded, and external programmes could be heard loading.
Without a working display, the laptop was effectively unusable for the customer, who needed it for day-to-day work.
Our Diagnosis
Our first step was to connect an external monitor via the VGA output on the X501U. The external display showed a clean, stable image with no distortion or missing areas, which confirmed the graphics processing path was healthy and the problem was isolated to the laptop’s own display.
With the GPU and video cable eliminated as causes, the fault pointed clearly to the LCD panel. Visual inspection of the panel surface confirmed it had failed.
How We Fixed It
We sourced a compatible replacement LCD panel for the Asus X501U and proceeded with the screen replacement. We removed the display bezel, disconnected the faulty panel, and fitted the replacement. All display connections were reseated carefully before the bezel was secured.
We then ran a series of post-installation checks: brightness control across the full range, screen uniformity across the panel, colour accuracy, and resolution. All passed without issue.
The Result
The Asus X501U was returned to the Putney customer with a fully working display — clear image, consistent brightness, and correct resolution. The repair was completed the same day.
Why This Happens on This Model
The Asus X501U uses a 15.6-inch LCD panel in a budget chassis design. The panel on this model is not rated for particularly high brightness, and units that have been used at maximum brightness for extended periods show accelerated backlight and pixel degradation over time. Physical damage — such as pressing on the lid or carrying the laptop in a bag without a sleeve — is also a common cause of panel failure. Unlike higher-end designs, the X501U’s bezel provides limited structural support to the panel, so local pressure on the lid can translate directly into panel damage.
Prevention Tips
- Transport the laptop in a padded sleeve or bag to protect the display from pressure damage in transit
- Avoid stacking items on top of the closed laptop — even moderate weight can crack or degrade the LCD panel over time
- Do not press or prod the display surface, particularly near the edges where the panel is least supported
- If the display starts showing intermittent artefacts or colour shifts, have it checked before the fault progresses to full panel failure
- Connecting an external monitor when the built-in display is unreliable can keep the laptop usable while you arrange a repair
