What Was Happening

A customer in Roehampton brought us an HP Compaq Presario GQ-60 that had completely stopped working without any prior warning. The laptop produced no LED activity when plugged in or when the power button was pressed, the fan did not spin, and there was no display output. The customer had tried multiple chargers and had left the battery out overnight before bringing the machine to us.

The failure was sudden and complete. The previous evening the laptop had been working normally; the next morning it did not respond at all.

Our Diagnosis

We connected the laptop to a bench power supply and used a multimeter to trace the power delivery path from the charging input through to the board. Current was reaching the motherboard correctly, but the board was not initiating the startup sequence. This ruled out the charger, the DC jack, and the battery as causes, pointing clearly to the motherboard itself.

Further testing confirmed the motherboard had failed. The processor, RAM, and storage drive were all intact — only the board required replacement.

How We Fixed It

We sourced a compatible replacement motherboard for the Compaq Presario GQ-60. Once the replacement board arrived, we carefully transferred the existing processor, RAM modules, and other reusable components from the failed board to the replacement. The drive and wireless card were also reconnected, and the chassis was fully reassembled.

The laptop was then put through a series of boot tests and stability checks to confirm everything was functioning correctly before it was returned.

The Result

The Presario GQ-60 returned to full working condition. It booted normally, ran stably, and the customer’s data — which had remained on the original drive throughout — was fully accessible on the rebuilt machine.

Why This Happens on This Model

The HP Compaq Presario GQ-60 is a consumer-grade laptop from the early 2010s. Like many laptops of that era, the motherboard is the central hub for all power regulation, and a failure in any of the power management circuits can cause a complete no-power state. Surge events, extended use without adequate ventilation, and the general ageing of capacitors and MOSFETs on older boards all contribute to eventual motherboard failure. The GQ-60’s chassis design also restricts airflow to some board components, which can accelerate thermal stress over years of use.

Prevention Tips

  • Use a surge-protected extension lead or UPS to protect the laptop from power fluctuations, which are a common cause of board damage
  • Keep vents clear and use the laptop on hard, flat surfaces to prevent the fan from being blocked by soft furnishings
  • If the laptop becomes unusually hot during use, arrange a thermal clean before heat stress causes lasting board damage
  • A sudden complete failure with no warning is difficult to prevent, but regular backups mean data loss is not added to the repair cost
  • Avoid using a laptop with a failing charger that produces fluctuating voltage — this can damage board components over time

Key Takeaways

  • No LED, no fan, and no display on startup typically points to a motherboard or power-path fault rather than a battery issue
  • Power-path testing with a multimeter confirms whether the motherboard is receiving current
  • Motherboard replacement requires careful transfer of CPU, RAM, and reusable components to the replacement board
  • Full boot and stability testing after reassembly is essential before returning the laptop
