What Was Happening

A household in Fulham SW6 got in touch with a familiar frustration.   2. Looked at where the signal actually dropped. The only way to fix real-world coverage is to see the real-world home — its layout, its walls, and the specific rooms where the signal fell away. Thick walls, distance, and the position of the main router (often wherever the broadband happens to enter the house) all shape where the dead spots land.
  3. Checked how the nodes were talking to each other. In a mesh, the nodes have to relay the connection back to the main router — the “backhaul” — and if they’re placed too far apart or in the wrong spots, that link between them becomes the bottleneck. A node sitting in a dead spot can’t fix that dead spot, because it can’t get a strong enough connection itself.

How We Fixed It

  • Optimised the node placement. We repositioned the mesh nodes so each one sat where it could both fill a weak area and keep a strong link back towards the router — the balance that actually matters, and the step most self-installs get wrong.
  • Improved the connection between the nodes. We made sure the nodes were relaying to each other and to the router as cleanly as possible, so the coverage extended properly into the rooms that had been struggling rather than petering out.
  • Tested the whole home, room by room. The proof of a Wi-Fi fix is walking the house and checking it actually works everywhere it should. We confirmed reliable coverage throughout before we left, rather than just at the main unit.

The right place for a node is between the strong area and the weak one, where it can grab a solid connection and push it onward. Get that balance right across the house and the dead spots close up.

The other common culprits are the things people can’t easily see: thick walls and chimney breasts that block signal, a main router tucked wherever the broadband cable enters (often a hallway cupboard, about the worst place for it), and nodes spaced too far apart to keep a strong link between them. Where a wired connection between nodes is possible, it transforms performance, because it removes the wireless bottleneck entirely. None of this needs more expensive hardware — it needs the existing kit placed and configured for the specific home, which is exactly what an onsite visit is for. That’s the difference between a mesh that “should” work and one that does.
