What Was Happening
The Lenovo arrived from a Raynes Park SW20 owner with a pair of related frustrations. First, the machine had become unreliable — apps would stop responding, hanging or freezing when they should just work. Second, the owner needed their email set up properly in Outlook, along with their contacts, so the laptop was actually ready to use for day-to-day work rather than just switched on. They asked us to fix the Windows problems, give the machine a health check, take off some software they didn’t want, and get the email side sorted.
It’s a very common combination: a computer that has drifted into being both sluggish and half-set-up. Neither problem is dramatic on its own, but together they make a machine that’s quietly exhausting to use — you fight it to open things, and then it can’t do the one job you most need it for.
Our Diagnosis
- Read “apps not responding” as a system problem, not an app problem. When several different apps all hang, the common factor isn’t the apps — it’s the Windows installation underneath them. A system that’s cluttered, low on resources, or bogged down by background software will make everything on top of it stutter. So we looked at the machine as a whole rather than chasing individual programs.
- Spotted software weighing it down. Part of the picture was a heavy third-party antivirus (Norton) running in the background. Windows now includes solid built-in protection, and a bulky extra security suite on top can do more to slow a machine than to help it. Removing what isn’t needed is often the quickest win in a health check.
- Separated the fix from the setup. The email work was a different kind of task — configuration, not repair. We planned to get the machine healthy first, then set up Outlook properly on a system that was actually stable enough to keep it working.
How We Fixed It
- Repaired the Windows installation. We addressed the underlying system problems so that apps opened and responded as they should, rather than hanging.
- Ran a full health check and cleared the clutter. We went through the machine, removed the heavy third-party antivirus the owner didn’t need, and tidied up what was dragging on its resources — restoring responsiveness without touching the hardware.
- Set up Outlook email and contacts. We configured the owner’s email account in Outlook and got their contacts in place, so the laptop was ready to send and receive properly. We also helped with their cloud storage so their files were sorted alongside the email.
The Result
The Lenovo went back to Raynes Park doing both jobs it had failed at: running smoothly, with apps that responded instead of hanging, and set up for email in Outlook with contacts ready to go. The owner got back a machine that was genuinely ready to use — not just repaired, but set up — which is the difference between a computer that technically works and one you can actually sit down and get on with.
Why This Happens
“Apps not responding” is one of the most misread symptoms in computing, because it feels like each app is broken. Almost always, it isn’t. When multiple, unrelated programs all hang, the cause sits below them, in the Windows installation they all share. Over time a system accumulates background processes, leftover software, and general clutter, and every one of those takes a slice of the machine’s resources. Add a heavy security suite running constantly on top, and there’s little left for the app you’re actually trying to use — so it stutters and freezes. Clearing that out, rather than reinstalling each app, is usually what brings the responsiveness back.
The security-software point is worth dwelling on, because it catches a lot of people. Years ago, a third-party antivirus was essential. Today, Windows ships with capable built-in protection, and stacking a bulky paid suite on top often costs you more in performance than it gains you in safety. Lightening that load is one of the most reliable speed-ups in a health check.
The email side trips people up for a different reason: setting up Outlook properly — the right account settings, contacts imported, everything talking to the mail server correctly — is fiddly, and a half-configured mailbox is a daily annoyance. Getting it done once, correctly, on a machine that’s stable underneath it, is what turns a laptop from “on” into “ready”. It’s the unglamorous step that makes everything after it easy.
