What Was Happening
A customer in East Putney SW15 contacted us in some distress because she could not log into her computer. The login screen was present, the password field was available, and she was typing the correct password — but nothing was appearing in the field, and the login was failing every time.
She had tried multiple times and was concerned something had gone wrong with her account or the computer itself. She had important files she needed to access that morning.
Our Diagnosis
The situation was quickly clarified on arrival. The Bluetooth keyboard had disconnected — silently, without any notification or indicator visible on screen. From the customer’s perspective, she appeared to be typing normally, but no input was reaching the computer.
The login screen appeared as expected, the computer was running normally, and the account was intact. The fault was entirely in the input path: with no keyboard connection, no characters could be entered at the login prompt.
This is a surprisingly common cause of apparent login failure, particularly with wireless peripherals, and it is easily confused with a genuine account or system problem.
How We Fixed It
We re-established the Bluetooth keyboard connection through the computer’s Bluetooth settings, which were accessible via mouse. Once the keyboard was reconnected and confirmed as receiving input, the customer was able to enter her password and log in immediately.
We then ran through a brief stability check to confirm the keyboard remained connected through normal use and did not drop the connection again during the visit.
The Result
Access was restored immediately and the customer was back at her desk and working within minutes of our arrival. No hardware repair was needed and no account changes were required.
Why Bluetooth Keyboards Disconnect
Bluetooth keyboards disconnect for a range of reasons: battery depletion, interference from other wireless devices, a Bluetooth stack update that changed connection behaviour, or the computer entering a low-power state that drops peripheral connections. On some Windows setups, Bluetooth devices are automatically disconnected when the computer has been idle for a period to save power. When the keyboard disconnects at or before the login screen, the user has no visible indication — the computer is waiting for input that is no longer arriving.
Prevention Tips
- Keep a wired USB keyboard available as a backup, particularly if you rely on a Bluetooth keyboard for login
- If a Bluetooth keyboard stops working unexpectedly, check the battery level before assuming a fault — low battery is the most common cause of intermittent Bluetooth disconnection
- Check Windows power settings for Bluetooth devices; the option to allow the computer to turn off devices to save power can be disabled for keyboards
- If login fails unexpectedly and you are sure the password is correct, try a different input method — this quickly narrows down whether the fault is the input device or the account
- Keep a note of your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth passwords somewhere accessible — if you are locked out of a device, having alternative credentials to hand helps
