What Was Happening
A Wandsworth SW18 customer brought in a Toshiba laptop with a cracked screen following a drop. The display had visible fracture lines spreading from a corner impact point, with a dark patch obscuring part of the screen. The rest of the machine was functioning normally — it started up, applications ran, and the keyboard and trackpad worked correctly.
Without the display, the laptop was not practically usable, and the customer needed a fast repair.
Our Diagnosis
We connected an external monitor to confirm the graphics path was healthy. The external image was clean and stable, which confirmed the GPU and video cable were undamaged. Visual inspection of the panel surface confirmed LCD panel failure from the impact.
The backlight was tested separately and found intact. With the GPU, cable, and backlight confirmed as undamaged, only the LCD panel required replacement.
How We Fixed It
We sourced a compatible replacement panel for the Toshiba laptop, removed the cracked display, and fitted the replacement. All display connections were reseated before the bezel was secured.
Post-installation, we tested the display across the full brightness range — low, mid, and full brightness — and across the full panel area for uniformity and dead pixel check. The display passed all checks cleanly.
The Result
The Toshiba laptop was returned to the Wandsworth SW18 customer the same day with a fully restored display. No fracture lines, no dark patches, no brightness irregularities.
Why This Happens on Toshiba Laptops
Toshiba consumer laptops from this era use LCD panels that are protected only by the plastic bezel and the glass-effect panel surface. When a corner impact occurs, the force concentrates at the point of contact and the LCD substrate — which is glass — fractures. The dark patches that develop after a crack are liquid crystal material from the broken substrate, which is irreversible. The fracture pattern typically spreads from the impact point outward. Toshiba’s lid design on budget and mid-range models provides standard structural protection, but like all LCD panels, it is not designed to absorb direct impact.
Prevention Tips
- Use a padded laptop sleeve or bag with a dedicated laptop compartment — unprotected machines in a bag are vulnerable to pressure and impact from other items
- Avoid placing the laptop on the edge of a desk, sofa arm, or surface from which it could fall
- After a drop, check the display, keyboard, trackpad, and ports to confirm no secondary faults — a thorough check at repair time prevents discovering additional problems later
- If only a corner of the screen is cracked, use an external monitor to maintain productivity while a panel replacement is arranged
- A screen protector prevents surface scratches but does not protect against crack damage from impact
