The short answer: usually yes, but not for the reason you think
Ask most people why their Wi-Fi feels slower since they filled the house with smart plugs, cameras and speakers, and they will blame bandwidth — the sheer volume of data being downloaded. In reality, the vast majority of smart devices sip data. A smart bulb reporting its status, a motion sensor, a thermostat — these send tiny packets a few times a minute. You could run fifty of them and barely dent a decent broadband line.
The genuine problem is airtime. Wi-Fi is a shared conversation: only one device can talk on a given channel at any instant. Every gadget that wants to speak has to wait its turn, then announce itself, then hand back the floor. When you have forty devices politely taking turns, the channel spends a surprising amount of time on that back-and-forth overhead rather than moving your actual data. Your laptop’s video call is now queueing behind a chatty doorbell and a fridge checking for a firmware update.
Bandwidth versus airtime, in plain English
Think of your router as a single-lane road with a traffic warden. Bandwidth is how fast a car can drive; airtime is how long each car occupies the junction before the next is waved through. A slow, older smart device is like a learner driver stalling at the lights — it holds the junction far longer than the small amount of data it carries would suggest, because it transmits at a low, robust data rate.
This is why one cheap, distant camera can drag down a whole network. It clings to a weak signal, drops to the slowest speed to stay connected, and in doing so hogs airtime that faster devices could have used. The fix is rarely “more broadband speed” — it is reducing how long each device spends holding the channel.
How many devices is too many?
There is no single magic number, but a few practical thresholds are worth knowing. A typical home router comfortably handles 20 to 30 active devices. Push past that and you are relying heavily on the router’s ability to juggle them efficiently — something budget or ISP-supplied routers do poorly. Many older routers also have a hard cap on simultaneous connections buried in the firmware, and a smart home can quietly breach it.
The count that matters is not the number of gadgets you own, but how many are actively transmitting and how well each holds a signal. Ten devices spread across a large house on weak signal can cause more grief than thirty sitting close to a strong access point.
Split the load across bands and networks
Modern routers broadcast on 2.4GHz and 5GHz (and increasingly 6GHz). The 2.4GHz band travels further and through walls better, which is exactly why most smart home kit uses it — but it is also slower, more congested, and shared with your neighbours’ networks, baby monitors and microwaves.
A sensible approach is to let the slow, low-priority smart devices live on 2.4GHz and keep 5GHz clear for laptops, TVs and video calls. Some routers do this automatically; others need you to create separate network names so devices land where you want them. Why mesh helps a busy smart home
A single router in the hallway forces distant devices onto weak signals, and weak signals mean slow data rates and wasted airtime. A mesh system places several nodes around the property so every device has a strong, nearby point to connect to. Because each device can then transmit quickly and get off the channel, the whole network breathes more easily — even though you have not added a scrap of bandwidth.
Mesh also lets devices roam onto the least congested node rather than all crowding one radio. For a home with cameras front and back, speakers in several rooms and a scattering of sensors, that spread makes a genuine, noticeable difference. Practical steps to keep it fast
- Update your router firmware, then update the smart devices themselves; old firmware often transmits inefficiently and reconnects constantly.
- Position cameras and sensors within solid range of a router or mesh node — a strong signal is the single biggest airtime saver.
- Retire or replace the worst offenders: a couple of ancient, flaky devices frequently cause more slowdown than a dozen modern ones.
- Reboot the router occasionally; connection tables and memory leaks build up on cheaper hardware.
- If your router is more than five or six years old and you are past 25 devices, upgrading the hardware usually helps more than upgrading your broadband package.
None of this requires ripping everything out. Most sluggish smart homes come good once the devices are spread across bands, the weak-signal offenders are sorted, and coverage is even throughout the property.
