Assigning a static IP address to an HP Smart Tank 9020 can prevent random offline states, lost print paths, and software communication failures.
In this case, a property management office in Denmark Hill, SE5 could print from normal apps but not from PMX property management software. There were no paper or ink faults. The issue was network-side.
The Problem: PMX Could Not Find the Printer
The team used PMX for contracts and maintenance workflows. Their printer worked for basic tasks, but PMX print jobs disappeared with no useful error.
After standard checks (drivers, spooler, firewall, and queue tests), we identified the root cause: PMX required the printer to stay on a fixed IP address.
Why Static IP Solved It
Most office printers use dynamic IP assignment (DHCP). Over time, these IPs can change.
PMX expected a known fixed target. Once the printer IP changed, PMX sent jobs to the wrong address.
Step-by-Step: Assign a Static IP
- Open the printer network settings on the HP control panel.
- Note the current IP address.
- On a device in the same network, open the printer’s web interface using that IP.
- Go to
Network Settings > IPv4. - Switch from DHCP/dynamic to manual/static.
- Set the advised static IP (for this case:
192.168.1.108). - Enter subnet mask and gateway values for the local router.
- Save, reboot printer, and update PMX printer path.
- Run a test print.
Result
Once static IP assignment was applied, PMX detected the printer immediately and print jobs completed normally.
