Your Nearest Laptop Repair Shop
Roehampton sits between Putney and Richmond — right in the middle of our service area, and closer to our workshop than most of the other postcodes we cover. If your laptop or MacBook is broken, the nearest option with genuine repair capability (not a post-it-away service, not a shop that outsources to a third party) is us.
We’ve been repairing laptops and MacBooks at 66 Lower Richmond Road since 2014. Roehampton customers drop in regularly — from the residential estate, from Roehampton University, and from the streets between the park and the river.
What We Fix
Cracked Screens
A cracked laptop screen is one of the most common walk-in repairs we see. It’s also one of the more straightforward — the panel is replaced, not repaired, and for most models the job takes a few hours.
For standard Windows laptops, screen replacement typically runs £80–£140 including parts and labour. MacBook screens are more expensive — the panels themselves cost more and the assembly is more involved, particularly on Retina models — and typically range from £180 to £350 depending on the model.
If your screen has failed without obvious physical damage — flickering, going dark, lines down the display — that’s usually the panel too, though occasionally a cable or graphics fault. We confirm during the free diagnostic.
Battery Problems
Laptop batteries have a finite lifespan measured in charge cycles — typically 800–1,000 for most modern batteries. Once a battery is significantly degraded, it shows: short runtimes, unexpected shutdowns at 20–30% charge, or the machine only working when plugged in.
We replace batteries on Windows laptops (£65–£120) and MacBooks (£95–£150). MacBook users can check their battery health by going to Apple menu → System Information → Power — the cycle count and current capacity are shown there. If you’re above 800 cycles with noticeably reduced runtime, it’s time.
Virus and Malware
University laptops and home machines used for study pick up malware. It often arrives via downloaded files, torrent clients, or browser extensions that seemed legitimate. Signs: the machine is unusually slow, browser redirects to sites you didn’t navigate to, or antivirus alerts you’ve dismissed because the machine still seemed to be working.
We remove infections properly — not just running an antivirus scan and calling it done, but checking startup items, browser extensions, scheduled tasks, and system services for anything that shouldn’t be there. Cost: £65–£95.
Data Recovery
Losing files on a laptop is disproportionately stressful. Coursework, work documents, photos — the response is usually the same: “can you get them back?”
In most cases, yes. Files deleted accidentally, a drive that’s failed to mount, or a machine that won’t boot due to software failure — these are typically recoverable. Physical drive failure is more uncertain and depends on the extent of damage. We assess honestly and don’t charge if recovery isn’t viable.
Everything Else
We also handle:
- SSD upgrades — replacing an ageing spinning hard drive with an SSD is the single biggest performance improvement you can make to an older laptop
- RAM upgrades — where the machine allows it (many modern laptops have soldered RAM, which can’t be upgraded)
- Water and liquid damage — time-sensitive, bring it in as soon as possible after a spill
- Wi-Fi and connectivity problems — both hardware (faulty network card) and software (driver or configuration issues)
- Keyboard and trackpad repair — particularly relevant for 2016–2019 MacBook Pro butterfly keyboards

For Roehampton University Students and Staff
We see a steady stream of repairs from the university — MacBooks and Windows laptops that have been dropped, had liquid on them, or developed faults mid-semester at the worst possible time.
A few specific notes:
Act fast with liquid spills. A spill on a laptop during a lecture or in the library is a common emergency. Power it off immediately — don’t wait to see if it still works. The damage from powering on a wet circuit is usually worse than the liquid itself. Bring it in as soon as you can.
Back up before the repair. We can recover data in most cases, but a current backup means you can be without the machine for the repair time without losing work. If you’re not backing up regularly, macOS Time Machine with an external drive is the simplest setup — we can show you how when you come in.
Student discount: Ask when you drop in. We’re the local shop — we’re not trying to maximise every transaction from customers who live five minutes away.
