Laptop Repair for Wandsworth Residents and Businesses
When a laptop fails in Wandsworth, most people end up choosing between three bad options: paying Apple Store prices, waiting two weeks for a postal service, or buying a replacement before they’ve confirmed the old machine is actually dead. None of those are the right answer in most cases.
PC Macgicians has been repairing laptops and MacBooks from our Putney workshop since 2014. We’re close enough to serve Wandsworth customers quickly — drop-in, same-day assessment, and a fixed quote before any work starts. If you can’t get to us, we collect.
The Repairs We Handle Most for Wandsworth Customers
Screen Replacement
Cracked or broken laptop screens are one of the most common repairs we see from across South West London. A physical crack — from a dropped bag, a closed lid with something underneath, or a direct knock — means the panel needs replacing. Backlight failure (laptop looks on but the screen is very dark) or vertical lines running down the display are usually panel faults too, though occasionally a GPU or cable issue.
Screen replacement costs vary depending on the laptop make and model. Budget Windows laptops typically run £80–£140 for the panel and labour. MacBook screens are more involved — particularly Retina and Liquid Retina XDR panels — and typically sit in the £180–£350 range depending on the model year. We use quality replacement panels and the repair comes with a 90-day warranty.
Battery Replacement
Lithium batteries degrade gradually over two to four years of regular use. By the time a battery is giving you two hours from a full charge, or the machine is shutting down unexpectedly at 30%, it’s usually worth replacing.
For Windows laptops, battery replacement is typically £65–£120 depending on the model. For MacBooks, the battery is more integrated and the job takes longer — costs typically run £95–£150 depending on the model. We use batteries that meet the original capacity specification, not cheap cells that degrade within six months.
Data Recovery
This is the repair that causes the most panic. A laptop that won’t turn on, a drive that’s making noises, a machine that was dropped — the immediate concern is almost always “can you get my files back?” In most cases, yes.
Logical failures (corrupted file system, deleted files, failed operating system) have high recovery rates. Physical failures (damaged read heads, water damage, fire damage) are more complex and outcomes vary depending on the extent of damage. We assess before quoting — diagnosis is free and we’ll give you a realistic picture before you commit to anything.
Slow Performance and Software Issues
A laptop that takes five minutes to get to the desktop isn’t necessarily broken — it’s usually clogged with background processes, a failing drive showing early warning signs, or a system that’s been accumulating software debris for years. We carry out a full health check, identify the cause, and fix it rather than just wiping and reinstalling (though sometimes that is the right answer, done properly with your data backed up first).
Virus and Malware Removal
Wandsworth has a healthy mix of small businesses — retail on Garratt Lane, tradespeople, freelancers, professional services around the town centre. Business machines that pick up malware are a recurring problem, particularly where staff are using personal devices for work. We remove infections cleanly, check for data exfiltration, and advise on basic protection going forward.

MacBook Repair in Wandsworth
MacBook repairs account for a significant share of what we do. Common faults from Wandsworth customers include:
Water damage. Liquid spills on MacBooks are time-sensitive. The longer a machine sits powered on or attempts to charge after a spill, the more corrosion spreads across the logic board. If you’ve had a spill, power it off immediately and don’t try to charge it. Bring it in as soon as possible — outcomes are meaningfully better the sooner we assess it.
Keyboard issues. The butterfly keyboard generation (2016–2019 MacBook Pro) is prone to key failure from even minor debris. Post-2019 machines with the Magic Keyboard mechanism are significantly more reliable but still get sticky keys from liquid ingress. We can replace individual keys, the full keyboard, or the top case depending on what’s needed.
Logic board faults. GPU failures, charging circuit issues, and component-level board faults are repairable in many cases without replacing the entire board. Component-level repair takes more time than a straight swap but is often significantly cheaper — particularly on MacBook Pros where the board itself is expensive.
Charging problems. MacBook not charging is usually one of three things: a failed MagSafe adapter or USB-C cable (start here), a dirty or damaged charging port, or a fault with the charging circuit on the logic board. We work through them in order rather than jumping straight to the expensive diagnosis.

What Repairs Cost
We quote after diagnosis, not before — the cost of a screen replacement on a 2019 MacBook Pro is meaningfully different from one on a 2024 model, and quoting blind doesn’t help anyone. What we can say:
| Repair type | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Laptop screen replacement | £80–£350 depending on make and model |
| Battery replacement | £65–£150 |
| SSD replacement or upgrade | £80–£180 inc. parts |
| Virus and malware removal | £65–£95 |
| Water damage assessment and repair | £95–£280 depending on extent |
| Data recovery | From £120 depending on fault type |
| Full health check | £45 (free if you proceed with a repair) |
Diagnosis is always free. You get a fixed quote before we start. If we can’t fix it, you don’t pay.
Why Not Just Use the Apple Store?
For Wandsworth-based Apple users, the nearest Apple Store is Westfield Shepherd’s Bush or the Royal Exchange in the City — both a significant journey, and both operating on Apple’s pricing structure.
Apple charges based on standardised repair tiers rather than what the actual fault is. A MacBook with a minor logic board component failure gets quoted the same as one with full board damage. We repair at the component level where it makes sense, which is frequently cheaper than Apple’s flat-rate tier.
There’s also the wait. Apple Store Genius Bar appointments in London regularly have multi-day waits. We assess same-day and in most cases can quote the same day too.
We’re not the right choice for every repair — if your MacBook is under warranty or covered by AppleCare, use it. But for out-of-warranty machines or faults Apple won’t cover (accidental damage, water damage), an independent shop is almost always the better option economically.
